The goal of this f2f is really to have an agreement on how to proceed with these items. The agreement on these will enable the WG to be on a better and faster path of success and it is critical to get to that point. Otherwise, 1) recruiting other companies into this WG will be a mission impossible challenge (How many new companies have joined SPDX recently?), 2) Maintaing current participants will also be challenge if we don't have a resolution on these items, and not to forget the 3) fading possibility of achieving the goal of making compliance easier to achieve via SPDX standard data exchnage format (across supply chains).

Project Governance: I will propose a governance model and drive this discussion

WG Structure: Goes with the above item as part of governance

Roadmap for 2012-2013-2014: I have a proposal on setting up a roadmap that will initiate this discussion

Charter: Mission / Goals / Vision: Continue this discussion and get to a closure on it.

Recruitment: I have a proposal on this that covers companies to approach and how

SPDX web site

Secondary agenda items:

These items are not the reasons we're calling for this meeting. Going forward there is a need to have a different model. This will be covered by the governance model proposal I am targeting for the F2F (planning in progress - see http://spdx.org/wiki/planning-face-face-meeting-september-october-2012)

2- Having a clear project governance and roadmap will help with recruitment activities. Other items that will also help include: web site, additional presence of SPDX in various events, outreach to specific/targeted open source communities and getting open source developers feedback, providing SPDX content in the form of practical papers - tutorial style, doing more than 1 F2F (for all of SPDX WG) and inviting target companies to attend a 0.5 day of educational track on SPDX, generating SPDX for small open source projects to be used as examples and case studies, etc.

3- The WG need to consider creating content that we can publish on the improved web site, which can include providing guidance to SPDX users (open source developers, open source maintainer, general users of open source software, corporate developers, etc). The content can cover how they can use SPDX in their specific role for instance. How-to style documentation.

4- Creating a program to on-board new members into SPDX will be very helpful. Assume we have a new company X that decided to join the SPDX WG. Is there a way to get them up to date on what is going on and to identify areas they can contribute? This is what I mean by on-boarding. It can include documentation, seminar offered over a call or better face to face (esp if SPDX existing members are close by to new company), a document that identifies how to participate, etc.

===========

If thats the case, please feel free to post to the list and I can make the appopriate changes or add a line after the table stating who you are and what your feedback is.

The Assigned To and Status fields will be taken care of by the web revamp team.

Item

Description

Source

Assigned To

Status

1

I noticed that the link on the home page for spdx-tech lower right under roles and responsibilities goes to a basically empty page (http://spdx.org/content/technical-0) . I’m not sure if the page just needs to be filled in or if it should link to http://spdx.org/wiki/spdx/spec-development

Gary

2

Raise up SPDX License List on the menu hierarchy

Jilayne

3

SPDX Tech Page Comments
- Add Bug Tracking page. The grass-roots effort includes representatives from more than 20 organizations—software, systems and tool vendors, foundations and systems integrators—all committed to creating a standard for software package data exchange formats.
Suggested:
The SPDX project is hosted at the Linux Foundation that provides a neutral environment for collaboration. The SPDX standard is developed by the participants of the project which include representatives from more than 20 organizations—software, systems and tool vendors, open source foundations and systems integrators. The SPDX participants are committed to creating a standard for software package data exchange formats.

Ibrahim

6

Term-wise:
SPDX is a Working Group of the Linux Foundation. (Update) I later read also that these are called teams. This needs to be updated to be consistent.

Ibrahim

7

Under http://spdx.org/about-spdx/background
You jump to this page from: http://spdx.org/about-spdx

Ibrahim

8

The background is repetitive from the first landing page and thats fine. Currently they have their own URLs.

Ibrahim

9

Under http://spdx.org/content/tutorials

Aesthetics aside, is it possible to provide a 1-2 lines description of what the paper, webinar and spec are?
For an example, visit http://www.linuxfoundation.org/publications/workgroup and scroll towards the end where we feature the SPDX paper.

The SPDX video is hosted on BlackDuck site. I think this should live under spdx.org. You can get a youtube or vimeo account for spdx and host videos there and embed them on the spdx.org site.

If I click on "Read the Spec" blue box I get transfered to http://www.linuxfoundation.org/publications/workgroup. This is not a tutorial.
On that new URL, there is also a mention of License List. For new reader, this is first mention. I think you may need some basic description.
It feel that the site keeps throwing users from one page to another.

Ibrahim

10

UNDER http://spdx.org/content/how-participate

How to participate?

I think this pages requires an overhall in terms of reorganizing the material,

1) I could not find anything at all about the project governance. How decisions are made? by whom? who drives the project? how roadmap items get decided? who does the work? is participation tied to providing resources? how to become a chair in a sub-workgroup? how to be a chair of SPDX? etc etc.

2) Participation seems to be treated differently than Contributing. This is related to item 1) above - governance.

3) It feels as if this is treated as an open source project. I may be wrong. However, in all of the similar efforts I participated in for the past 12 years (at OSDL and other efforts at the LF), a standard similar to SPDX has usually two branches: the specs itself driven by committed companies who want to move the standard and get it adopted and use it, and the reference implementation which is open to anyone and everyone to participate in. Is this something you considered?

4) Also under this page, it mentions the 3 sub-groups with links to the page of each of them. The pages for all 3 sub-groups are formatted in a different way with different set of info presented. (Update) Later on I discovered new pages that discuss what the teams do (totally random). http://spdx.org/content/business and http://spdx.org/content/legal and http://spdx.org/content/technical.

Ibrahim

11

Lots of empty pages. In any case, generally speaking, the site needs updates on its:
- Structure / Brows-ability / Usability
- Updating text / content
- Updating menu items
- Consistency in terminology
- Removing dead pages and consolidating existing pages
- Formatting text on pages
- Page divisions and linkages between pages
- Governance information is either absent or I could not find it
- Roadmap information is either absent or I could not find it ( Priorities page is empty http://spdx.org/content/current-priorities-work-progress-2)

Ibrahim

13

The Collateral material here need to be cleaned up and a final version published (incl new pdf file): http://spdx.org/documentation/beta-collateral
What's "Email blurb for recruiting beta sites" at the top of that page?
Another collateral page: http://spdx.org/content/spdx-launch-collateral - maybe merge with http://spdx.org/documentation/beta-collateral?

Ibrahim

14

Are the contacts still valid? http://spdx.org/about/spdx/contact

Ibrahim

15

Add self subsubscribing pages for membership

Jack

16

Workgroups are posting meeting info on their main page and under the menu item for meeting calnedar and access. Please see the bottom of this page to indicate which dates works best with you.

I have a number of agenda items that can easily consume a full day worth of discussion. I divide the agenda items in two categories: Core agenda items are the primary reason to hold this f2f meeting, and secondary agenda items will be discussed given time availability.

Core agenda items:

For all these core items, I will have a proposal to present that will drive the discussion.

However, since a lot of folks are expected to attend, then it would make sense to add 1 more day to the meeting to cover these items.

Review current state of affairs for each sub-team

Current challenges, what are we doing about it, and how can we do better

Review of what needs to be done to get to SPDX 2.0 (technical, legal and business)

2.0 Use Cases

This is a working session where people driving the effort are expected to drive the discussions. For each of the above items, it would be fantastic if Team Leads/Chairs can prepare a presentation that covers

What was achieved in your team since Jan 2012?

What are the challenges your team is facing? Any proposal on how to resolve these challenges? How can other teams or the Linux Foundation help you with these?

What is on your plate for the rest of the year and well into 2013?

What areas you need help to get you unlocked?

etc.

Anyone who participated in program reviews in their companies will find this familiar. I chose these dates based on my availability as I have a significant amount of international travel for the rest of the year. Please sign your name next to the dates you can attend as a method to track who can attend which dates. I can attend all of these.

Suggested Locations:

Any SPDX participant companies in the bay area who can host?

Introduction:

The purpose of this wiki page is to host the planning information for the SPDX f2f we are targeting to hold in the bay area in Sept/Oct 2012.

The goal of this f2f is really to have an agreement on how to proceed with these items. The agreement on these will enable the WG to be on a better and faster path of success and it is critical to get to that point. Otherwise, 1) recruiting other companies into this WG will be a mission impossible challenge (How many new companies have joined SPDX recently?), 2) Maintaing current participants will also be challenge if we don't have a resolution on these items, and not to forget the 3) fading possibility of achieving the goal of making compliance easier to achieve vis SPDX across supply chains.

The goal is to have a better alignment between the various team, understand where the challenges are and identify how we can resolve them, plan for getting 2.0 out of the door, etc.

This F2F is really the opportunity for SPDX to regroup and proceed with a strong momentum.

Suggested F2F Dates:

September 10-11:

September 27-28:

October 1-2:

October 2-3:

Above are possible dates for the F2F.
